Random Dozen

Joining in with Lid over at 2nd Cup of Coffee for her weekly meme Random Dozen.

1. Candy corn: Your thoughts?

Funny you should ask!!!!!

Having just polished off the bag of candy corn I bought at the Jelly Belly Candy Factory I am in an official state of mourning!

I love those sweet little bites of chewy wonderfulness.

And funny you should ask part two.

[image[3].png]

I just received this in my last Lion Brand Newsletter. Are these not the cutest things you have ever seen. In my mythical spare time I plan on making a few of these to place in a basket for my fall decorations…oh in maybe the year 2012, oh yea I just forgot that’s the alleged end of the world according to the Mayan calendar as well as a soon to be released major motion picture.

Oh well it was a good idea anyway!

If you want the pattern for this click here.

2. Briefly, what was the first conversation you ever had with your spouse? (or best friend, if you're not married.) (Or someone significant, like your librarian.)

How am I supposed to remember that far back???

3. Could you ever become a vegetarian?

Honestly, probably not! I think for health reason it is a good idea but I don't think I could go the rest of my life with out biting into a really juicy drippy medium rare cheese burger (throw a few slices of pepper bacon on top and I’m in heaven) or cutting into a perfectly grilled ribeye that is fork tender and slightly pink inside. I just don't think I could give it up. Pork Tenderloin, BBQ Chicken, Sausage and Peppers, 13 Bean Soup with Ham, Shrimp & Grits….

4. Have you ever dressed up your pet in a costume?

No! I have fond memories of dressing the family pet up in costumes but in my adult years no. My husband and I had a sweet blonde cocker spaniel named Spencer and he spent all his time in the buff. Our current pet the star of the family Buster had several sweater ensembles purchased by his previous owner which she kept. I have to say that I never fully understand what motivates people to dress up their animals. It’s cute and all but I always wonder why?

5. Name something about childhood that you miss (like Clark Bars, Teaberry Gum, Malibu Barbie, cracking fake eggs on people's heads with your fist and "It's the Great Pumpkin" airing only once a year).

Hands down sleepovers! I have such fond memories of the many many sleepovers I had or attended. There is just nothing like it. The gathering, the giggling, the sharing of secrets, the junk food, the silly games, doing each other nails, talking about boys, planning your future wedding, talking about everything and talking about nothing and staying up all night…come on was there anything better?

6. Have you ever won a trophy? If not, what do you deserve a trophy for?

Back in the day I was a Girl Scout. I am sure I still have my sash around here somewhere, but I digress. In the dark ages, for whatever reason they did not make a big deal about achieving the highest level as far as rank in the Girl Scouts, they still don't’. That still kinda bugs me!

They make a huge deal over a boy achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, having been a den mom it totally needs to be recognized in a major BIG way. The amount of work is enormous! I am digressing again…anyhoo I achieved the same rank in Girl Scouting and did all the work and there was no way to recognize it. My mom made me this handmade medal out of plaster-of-paris that said 1st Class on it and presented it to me at one of our meetings.

I think now they actually have a special ranking called The Gold Award. Back in my day there was nada, zip, nothing, a big fat goose egg.

I don't think I have ever won a trophy at anything, however I can cook a good meal and have often dreamed about entering the Pillsbury Bake Off Contest and winning a million dollars!

(edit: after finishing this post I began to think about that award that my mom made for me and guess what y’all! Look what I found in my dresser in the bedroom!!!)

7. When do you think is the appropriate time to begin playing Christmas music each year?

Please for all our sanity let’s not start until after Thanksgiving!

8. What's your favorite board game?

Trivial Pursuit! Love playing it however I seldom get any takers. My DD is a huge game player so we always get a new board game every Christmas. Our latest favorite is Pictureaka, it is a hoot to play and very easy and fun to play!!

9. How do you feel about surprises (receiving, not giving)?

Funny you should ask again!!!!

Love those little unexpected things like the hubs bringing home the occasional bunch of grocery store flowers or the DD experiencing a momentary laps into thoughtfulness and bringing me my morning coffee (Disclaimer here she really is a wonderful DD and does sweet things and has a great attitude most of the time, but as she has just stumbled into her teens in a big way the world has suddenly shifted and is now spinning around her, just so ya know), however since this is the BIG 50 for me this year I am wondering if there is a SUPRISE in my future. Let’s hope not!

So here are some flowers, Honey! I give a big thumb’s up!

SUPRISE! You’re 50! SURPRISE you have a gray hair sticking out of you chin! SURPRSE! You can no longer remember the first conversation you had with your husband, SURPRISE, you’re a grandma! SURPRISE, you have a teenager wearing mascara and getting her first crush on a boy!

To quote the ever popular Gomer Pyle…

SURPRISE! SURPRISE! SUPRISE!

Not so much!!!

10. Is it easy for you to say, "I'm sorry?"

I have no memory of my mom ever apologizing to me ever!

I want my children to understand the concept of forgiveness and being able to humble themselves and being able to admit when they are wrong and seek forgiveness. This can not happen if they do not understand the first step. To apologize, to say “I’m sorry” and really mean it, well that’s huge in my book! As a mom I can tell when the apology is insincere! For the recode I would rather that you not apologize if you genuinely do not mean it!

As a parent there have been numerous opportunities for me to live this example with my children.

So, yea! I say “I’m sorry!” all the time!

11. What is your favorite candle scent?

It depends. On the dinner table unscented. I absolutely do not want scented candles interfering with the food. Totally turns me off.

I love having one scented candle burning and I find that I gravitate to green smell, botanical smells. I am not real fond of overly sweet spicy smells.

12. October is traditionally "open house" time in public schools. If you had a literal open house in your home (like a reception) what light snacks would you serve visitors and what would you show them (as in art projects, graded papers) that would uniquely represent you?

Hmmmmmmm…….

Since it is fall and all I would probably have a big pot of hot spiced apple cider, maybe some hot chocolate, some cinnamon oatmeal raisin cookies, maybe some chex mix, you can never go wrong with a queso cheese dip and tortilla chips, I would probably toss out a plate of baby carrots and celery stick  and veggie dip for those who foolishly want to pretend to eat healthy during the holidays and of course a giant bowl of candy corn!

I would have pictures of all my completed prayer shawls  for everyone to look at as well as my current project out.

I would have some of the pictures of our most recent trips around.

I would also have pictures of my granddaughter out as she is a big part of my life now.

I would have pictures of my veggie garden laying about, as well as the plans for our future new back yard. I am totally excited about getting started on my backyard landscape!!!!!!

I would most assuredly have my Disciple bible study material out because I would want to discuss with you my latest “AHA!” moments that God has revealed to me.

And let’s not forget all of you. I would have my laptop out  and direct everyone one to spend a few minutes perusing my blogroll so that everyone could have a short visit with all of you.

Well that’s it for this weeks random dozen. Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that Linda is trying to plan an open house and needs menu ideas?????

As always leave it to Lid to come up with the really great ideas!!! I’m loving the Random Dozen!!!

Blessings

Robin

Happy Birthday!! I'd say you can be excused from remembering the first conversation! :-)

I love candy corn, too. I love the term you coined, "mythical spare time." So true, so true.

Love the medal your mom made for you, too. So sweet!

And I really love your answer to #12...you'd have a great display!

I love that you found the medal your mom made.

We have a Boy Scout working on his Eagle. We've told him he can't get his drivers license until he gets his Eagle and he can't do 'just any' project. He has to do something meaningful...don't worry, I'll blog it when it happens!

Very fun getting to know you more. And as the mom of two teens I get the moment-by-moment not knowing what to expect. And I started late. I always said I was gonna go from nursing to menopause. It's was SUPPOSED to be a joke!!
