Project 365 – Week 5

Joining Sara for this weeks addition of Project 365, y’all go over and check out all the other folks who are joining in this week.

I’m a bit late to the party today. The much needed upgrade to the o’l laptop has been completed and I am almost done reloading software. But I have gotten most of the necessary things reloaded.

So on with 365!!!!

Sunday, January 24

Sunday morning was the annual Youth Pancake Breakfast. They are always a bit on the cold side, but then it’s really hard to do pancakes for a large crowd and keep them piping hot of the griddle. They were tasty and the money goes to support the youth activities.

Just a little glimpse into my glassware. It is amazing how sometimes the simplest thing can catch your eye.

The television was fun.

And she got a bit confused…why would I want the pink teething ring when I can have the dog bone instead???

Wednesday, January 27

A trip to the H Mart, the local Korean market.

IMG_0345

Y’all want some octopus???

Thursday, January 28

By Thursday evening there was a serious hormonal situation going on which required the administration of not only a 20 ounce Mighty Mocha Cappuccino from Quick Trip but several additional doses of dark chocolate and a few extra cc’s of milk chocolate as well.

Friday, January 29

Be still my heart. The NEW Goodwill that is only 7.1 miles from my house is finally open.

Two things for the grandbaby and one for me and all for under $7.00!

Going Off-Line

I will be out of pocket for a bit YIKES, THIS WILL REQUIRE LOTS OF DEEP BREATHING.

My laptop will be getting a much needed upgrade in hardware, and can I say that I am very excited about this. The old laptop memory was taxed to the limit and has been gasping for breath trying to keep up.

After my shinny new hard drive is installed I will have to reload software and all the various drivers bla bla bla bla…

So in the words of the Terminator “I’ll be back!” to blogging and popping over to all my fav blogs when I’m done.

Blessings

Anticipation VS Immediate Gratification

The focus of the last Random Dozen was about our approach to anticipation. I am  sure there is some literary term describing the experience of writing about something and then finding yourself experiencing what you have just written about but I don’t know what it is or if there is even such a thing.

I did think it out of the ordinary that on Wednesday we all spent time reflecting about anticipation and this was also the day that one of my more time consuming prayer shawl project was completed and then turned in.

When I began to think about it I realized that sometimes my approach to anticipation greatly depends on what I am anticipating, or how long I actually have to anticipate the end result and how gratifying the actual anticipating is.

Did that make any sense????

Back in September, the 16th to be exact I finished one prayer shawl and then I began working on a new one. This is not unusual but what I have learned over the various projects I have completed is the time it takes me to finish each project greatly effects my level of enthusiasm in which I approach working on it.

It is sort of a love hate relationships.

From September 16, 2009 until January 23, 2010 equals roughly 20 weeks. You toss in Thanksgiving, Christmas and a break of a several weeks for me to knit one lap throw and 4 scarves which I gave a Christmas gifts, so if I had to guestimate I would say all total I probably worked on this for 10 to 12 weeks, maybe??

IMG_0250

And finally it was finished. I took my long and toiled over prayer shawl and turned it in at the next meeting. I always have a sense of relief mixed in with gratification when I finally finish a project that has taken longer than I expected. Realistically it probably should have only taken me a few weeks to complete but if I am honest I dilly-dallied and bemoaned working on it because at the end of the night when I tossed in the crocheting towel and put my project back in the basket it seemed to be progressing in only 1 inch increments.

I joyfully turned in my completed shawl and with a sigh of relief picked up 5 skeins of a wonderful mossy green homespun yarn. If you have never worked with homespun you either love it our you hate it, and I love it. Some of the folks in prayer shawl don’t like working with it as it does tend to be a but fussy to work with. However, the soft texture is just beyond description. Needless to say I just love working with homespun, LOVE IT!

Here is why! I came home from church with a batch of yarn and began working on a new project.

I began on January 25 and at the end of an evening watching a few episodes of whatever was on television I had 13 inches completed.

IMG_0288

IMG_0287

The next day it grew to 38 inches!

IMG_0302 IMG_0301

And then only three days later, January 28th, it’s finished!

 IMG_0349  IMG_0352 IMG_0358

So there ya have it.

I am not sure what my point is in all of this. Maybe I just wanted to show of my latest project, but I have to share that maybe my enthusiasm for working on something may be directly related to my perceived notion of how long it will take me to finish it.

No rocket science here, just the honest truth. Maybe I should revisit some of my anticipation answers from Wednesday.

I have enough homespun for two more project and in fact I have already started another shawl.

IMG_0361

I think there is a point here, or maybe I’m just having a hormonal moment and think I am making sense when in reality I’ve just spent the last few moments blogging about yarn.

How can that be????

With the chill of winter upon us and since this post has been wandering around in my draft folder for what seems like forever I decide to shed a little summer sunshine into the dreary dull drums of late January.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…du du…du du…dudududu
More pictures of my garden.
However when I look at where this all started I notice that March is only a few shot weeks away and then it all starts again.
My how times flies when you having fun.
So if you are so inclined to take this trip down my garden memory lane well here it is in all its’ semi-glory!!

I got two crook neck squash from the garden before the bugs took over. Sadly the plant never really got established very well as the stem got bent over and dried out. Next year I will skip the yellow squash as it is not a family favorite

These were the only two yellow squash I got out of my garden this year. Boo Hoo, not really!!!
August 1, 2009
I have now given up count how many days it is post planting…it is just too hot!
The summer heat, plus a weeks neglects while I was at campmeeting took there toll, and there were some nasty little bugs that set up house on my squash and zucchini.

It’s looking a bit brown and kind of puny!!!!
July 12, 2009
The squash and zucchini started to come in but the progress was very slow! My inexperience was showing and I was thankful that my family was not depending on the less than stellar bounty of my little garden.

A bountiful mornings harvest to be sure but the news is not all good…

Greg came to the rescue and explained to me why this happen. Un-even watering and possible insect damage, who know… well Greg did!
Bye, bye cucumbers!
August 8, 2009
I pulled the remaining green bean plants out as they had stopped producing. If memory serves the way you are supposed to plant green beans is to stagger the rows. Plant a row then wait a week and then plant another row. However since I had only room for one row…the regrets of having a small garden bed. But the mess a beans I got were super good and totally worth the wait! IMG_0011
I pulled up the yellow squash as well as the zucchini. they had been attacked very severely but some kind of nasty  bug and had stopped producing.
IMG_0012
The cherry tomatoes are holding their own and I am hopeful that my regular tomatoes will make it as well a few lingering green peppers!

IMG_0003
The more things change the more they stay the same. I am back where I started in March. My little raised  veggie garden is ready to spend the winter resting and I am ready to get started next spring.
IMG_0004
All in all my first foray back into the world of backyard gardening after such a long absence has brought me such joy. I have a few jars of pepper jelly left and enough homemade pickle relish (sorry no post or picture) to last me until the next millennium in my pantry. Seriously, I am not sure what I am going to do with 5 jars of pickle relish, 5 jars, I don't know about you but we maybe go through 1 jar a year maybe. But I digress.
I have had so much fun documenting my success and my failures and sharing them with you all.
