Extreme Weather: Snow Jam 2011

Well it’s day two of the 2011 Snow Jam, the roads are frozen over, the mail is not running and all the schools are closed for the second consecutive day.

I anticipate them being closed yet again tomorrow.

We got a whopping 8 inches of snow in my area and since Sunday evening the temps have been hovering at or below freezing. It snowed all night long on Sunday and then on Monday by mid morning it turned to a steady few hours worth of freezing rain so now all the snow is covered with a nice thick shell of ice.

Monday morning we opened our front door to see this tidy little snow drift baring our path to the front walk, it was like little House on the Prairie Homecoming Christmas special, I had visions of  Mr. Edwards trudging through the snow to get to the safety of the Ingalls’ cabin…..

The hubs dove back in the storage area in the garage and retrieved the long abandoned sled. We all donned our multiple layers and spent a few moments out in the snow. Let it never be said that us southerners don’t know how to improvise. If it’s flat on the bottom then it is deemed appropriate for using as a sled. We saw laundry baskets, Rubbermaid tubs and even an inflatable pool float being used as a sledding devise, all of which worked wonderfully well.

This is my sweet hubby giving the local little ones a pull down the street, he got them going and they came the rest of the way and were all smiles at the bottom of the street!

Look at these smiling faces, nothing beats a snow covered hill…

There were a few four wheelers out and about as well.

After a few minutes of trudging around in the wet stuff, there was also a steady stream of frozen precipitation coming down so both myself and the dog had reached a level of dampness as well as being really cold. I grabbed the dog’s leash and left the daughter and hubs with all the energetic youngsters to their sledding and headed back to the the house for the warmth and comfort of the fireplace.

Look at the nice rosy pink cheeks….

When my snow bunnies returned from the frozen tundra I had a nice pot of steaming hot cocoa waiting for them. The DD took hers with a few marshmallows and the hubs and I opted for a slightly more fortified bit of warmth. A smidgen of Kahlua and Bailey’s worked wonders for a nice hot cup of cocoa!

The coca is holding out and I have a gallon of milk in the frig in the garage and I am thankful for buried power lines, we have been blessed to have electricity and heat at a constant supply. The food is holding out and we don't have to go anywhere pressing so for now we are keeping warm and dry inside the house.

I mean after all we are snowed in…

LOL!

Ahhhhh....Enjoy the ease of pace. Maybe it could be considered a late Christmas present: peace and simplicity. Loved the pictures - we just had a thin layer of ice, no snow. Stay warm! Looks a like a few more days of brrrrrr cooooollllld

Peppermint schnaps is also a nice additive to hot chocolate! ;)
When we lived in SC, the men would pull the kids around with lawnmowers, 'cause there weren't any "hills" in the neighborhood.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and for taking the time to leave a comment! I am excited to hear that you are thinking about joining in the 52 Weeks, 52 Letters project for 2011. I think it is going to be a very rewarding experience and I can't wait to hear how God is going to use you to encourage others. I just got back from the Hallmark store buying a few more notecards.

BTW... I lOVE the picture of your 3 kids on the sled...so adorable. That one is definitely frame-worthy! Also, I notice that you are from Dacula...my husband is originally from Snellville. ( :

Thanks again for stopping by my blog and I hope you'll visit again soon! Have a blessed weekend!
